Best Surf Season (April - June and September - October)
Santana's SSW-facing sandbars come alive when southern-hemisphere storm tracks aim long-period swell toward Central America. During April, May, June, September and October, the useful S/SSW/SW/WSW quadrant supplies anywhere from 45% to an incredible 90% of the wave energy, while average wave periods run a deep 12.7-13.7s. This is powerful, organised groundswell compared to the short-period trade windsea that dominates outside the season. Wave heights mostly sit in the fun, rippable 3-5ft (1-1.5m) range, with regular 5-6.5ft (1.5-2m) pulses when storm tracks align. Ideal surfing wind also jumps to 18-40%, especially during May, June, September and October, making these the months to plan a trip around.
Fair Surf Season (March, July, August and November)
March is the first real transition, with the average period climbing past 11s and the southern quadrant beginning to contribute meaningful energy, but the trades still dominate. July and August hold plenty of SSW/SW swell, yet the trade wind machine becomes more inconsistent and the ITCZ pulls close, making local wind patterns more variable. Ideal surf wind drops to 17-28%. November is the mirror image: southern energy is still in the water, but the trade wind regime is rebuilding quickly and the window for clean conditions starts to shrink. These months can absolutely fire when a fresh SSW/SW groundswell lines up with a morning offshore breeze, but they require more patience and a flexible schedule.
Low Surf Season (December - February)
December through February is the heart of the dry-season trade wind regime. The pressure gradient tightens between the North Atlantic subtropical high and the equatorial trough, producing relentless ENE/NE winds. Swell periods drop to 8-9s and the wave spectrum shifts almost entirely to ENE/NE windswell-direction that simply does not break cleanly on Santana's SSW-facing beach. Even though the average swell height sits near 4.6ft (1.4m), it is mostly lumpy, short-period, confused energy. Ideal surfing wind is rare, clocking in at only 4-8%. If you come during these months, you are gambling on a rare southern pulse and a brief easing of the trades.
