Best Surf Season & Climatology
Best Surf Season (April - May)
Spring brings the most balanced conditions to Niijima's east-facing reefs. As the Aleutian low weakens and the North Pacific transitions, a higher percentage of swell originates from the favorable east quadrant (E, ESE, SE). Combined with a shift toward lighter, more frequent westerly winds (offshore), April and May offer the best chance for clean, rippable surf in the 1-1.5m range with periods in the 7-8s zone. This is when the spot really comes to life.
Fair Surf Season (June - September)
Summer delivers a notable increase in ideal wind frequency, peaking at 25% in August, as the subtropical ridge strengthens and sea breezes become more consistent. However, the swell direction rotates to the south (SSW, SW, S) as typhoon activity ramps up. While these systems produce long-period, punchy swell (8-9s), the southerly angle is less direct for the east-facing lineup, often resulting in smaller, less consistent waves. Still, the window of clean, fun-sized waves is wider than in winter.
Low Surf Season (October - March)
From late autumn through early spring, Niijima experiences its largest average swell heights (1.6-1.8m), but the energy arrives predominantly from the west (W, WSW). This direction is unfavorable for the east-facing beaches, delivering weak, wrapping waves that rarely break with power. Compounding the issue, onshore easterly winds (NE, ENE) dominate during these months, making the surf choppy and messy. A few west-northwest winds blow offshore, but they rarely coincide with clean swell. Overall, this is the least reliable period for quality surf.
