Brusand seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
Brusand is a winter-bred wave. As the North Atlantic storm track powers up through the autumn, the Icelandic Low deepens and a conveyor belt of extratropical cyclones spins S, SSW, SW and WSW swell into the Norwegian coast. Average surf size jumps from 4ft (1.3m) in September to over 5ft (1.6m) by October, peaks near 6.5ft (2.0m) in January, and stays in the 5-6ft (1.5-1.9m) range through February, March and November. Swell periods hover around 8.5-9s, with frequent pulses of powerful 10-14s groundswell when the Atlantic really unloads. Offshore winds from N, NNE, NE and ENE are most reliable when high pressure settles over Scandinavia, and although only 15-18% of the hours are clean, the reward is a heavy, lined-up break firing down the south-west facing shoreline. Water temperatures are cold, 4.9-12.6°C, so a 5/4 hooded suit is mandatory.
Fair Surf Season (April - May and September)
The shoulder seasons are a game of patience. April still serves up 3.5ft (1.1m) average swell with an 8s period, and spring high pressure can deliver glassy offshore mornings with 20% ideal wind - the best clean-wind odds of the year. May drops to a smaller, shorter-period 3ft (0.9m) at 7.1s, yet the S-SSW/SW window remains consistent enough for fun, rippable sessions. September marks the turning point as the first deep Atlantic lows of the new season begin to re-energise the ocean; average wave height climbs to 4.3ft (1.3m) and the period lengthens to 7.5s. These months are less consistent, but on the right day you can find sunny, lighter winds and surprising quality.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
This is the summer flat spell for Brusand. The North Atlantic high-pressure ridge dominates and the storm track retreats far to the north, leaving average wave heights pinned at 3ft (0.9-1.0m) with short, choppy periods of 6.2-6.5s. Although S-SSW/SW/WSW directions actually appear more frequently in the wave rose during summer - up to 38% in August - most of it is low-energy, short-period windswell. The wind picture is also less favorable, with NNW and NW winds blowing over 20% of the hours and the ideal N/NE offshore window dropping to just 14-15%. Small longboard days and fun waves for beginners are possible, but dedicated surfers know the next Atlantic storm will be here before long.
