Karmay seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
The cold months are when Karmay truly wakes up. The North Atlantic storm track cranks south of Iceland, and especially during positive NAO phases it aims low pressure systems straight at the Norwegian coast, feeding a steady diet of S, SW, W and WSW swell into the North Sea. Long-period groundswell in the 10-14s range combines with average wave heights around 6.6-8.2ft (2.0-2.5m), and while the wind is far from perfect, the sheer energy is enough to make this southwest-facing beach one of northern Europe's more reliable winter options.
Fair Surf Season (April and September)
These shoulder months offer the best chance of combining real swell with cleaner conditions. April often sees fading NW/NNW windswell and a higher rate of offshore north to east winds, while September marks the first serious autumn storms and slowly recharging periods. Wave heights are smaller but still fun and rippable when the wind lines up.
Low Surf Season (May - August)
Summer is a waiting game at Karmay. The average period drops toward 7s and wave heights shrink to 3.6-3.9ft (1.1-1.2m), mostly windswell from NW and NNW plus inconsistent S/SW pulses. Persistent NNW winds and afternoon sea breezes create mushy, groveling conditions. For the dedicated crew, some clean longboard waves exist.
