Sele seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
Sele is a classic WSW-facing beach on the rugged southwest Norwegian coast, exposed to the full force of the North Atlantic and Norwegian Sea. During autumn and winter, the climatological storm track across the North Atlantic ramps up, and low pressure systems rolling east-northeastward towards Norway generate an almost constant feed of W and WSW swell. Average wave heights push into the 1.2-1.6m (4-5ft) range with average periods around 8.0-8.5s, meaning plenty of punchy, rideable surf. When a strong positive NAO pattern locks in, the westerlies strengthen further and Sele feels the full brunt of long-period W and WNW swell.
The catch is that these same systems often drag SW-W winds across the Norwegian coast, which are onshore at Sele. However, when the low pressure tracks just right and a cold front passes, pressure rises bring NE-ENE-E-ESE offshore winds. December offers the highest ideal wind percentage of the year at 15%, with January and February close behind. For a west-facing spot in Norway, this is as good as it gets.
Fair Surf Season (April & September)
The shoulder months mark a battle between fading winter energy and building autumn setups. April still sees decent NW-WNW groundswell, often around 0.9m (3ft) average with periods near 7.5s, but the wind tends to clock to NNW, producing more sideshore and onshore texture. September is the mirror image: the North Atlantic begins to wake up again, average heights climb to around 1.0m (3ft), periods lengthen to 7.1s, and the first real W-SW swells of the new season appear. It is not firing every day, but keen surfers can score clean waves whenever an autumn low pressure system aligns with a pocket of offshore east wind in the wake of a cold front.
Low Surf Season (May - August)
Summer is the quietest time of year around Sele. The polar front moves north, the North Atlantic storm track weakens, and average wave heights drop to 0.7-0.8m (2-3ft) with short-period 6.0-6.5s windswell. The dominant swell direction shifts to NW and NNW, which are less favorable for this WSW-facing beach, and the wind regime becomes dominated by frequent northerly and NNW-NW breezes, leaving the lineup bumpy and small. Ideal wind percentages are in the single digits, as low as 4% in July, and the water is warmest, but surfers would be lying if they said Sele is world-class in summer. It takes a rare tropical storm remnant or unusual North Atlantic low to create something worth paddling out for.
