Isla Chepillo seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (August - November)

Isla Chepillo is a marginal, southwest-facing beach in the Gulf of Panama, and the wave climate here is dominated by small SSW swell rather than powerful open-ocean groundswell. The closest thing to a best surf season arrives late in the wet season, from August through November. Average wave heights climb to 0.4-0.5m (1.3-1.6ft), and the percentage of waves in the 0.5-1m (1.5-3.3ft) class jumps to 14-27%, with occasional 1-1.5m (3.3-5ft) pulses showing up in September, October and November. The swell direction is almost pure SSW, which is ideal for this southwest-facing coast. Winds are the trade-off, with onshore south winds becoming frequent, but this is still the most likely window of the year to find a rideable, groveling wave.

Fair Surf Season (December - April)

The dry season brings the strongest and most consistent offshore winds, with N/NNE trades blowing across the spot up to 65% of the time, while average swell periods stretch into the 8.6-12.1s range, offering long-period, powerful lines. The catch is that average wave heights remain stuck around 1ft (0.3m), with well over 90% of all waves below 0.5m. It is a season of clean, glassy flatness rather than real surf, but when a sneaky SSW groundswell fills in under light northerly winds, the conditions can look surprisingly inviting for a longboard or groveler.

Low Surf Season (May - July)

The early wet season is the low point of the year in terms of overall surf quality. The swell becomes increasingly SSW in direction, and some 0.5-1m (1.5-3.3ft) energy arrives, but periods drop to the 9.0-9.5s range by June and July, while south/southwest winds become more common, adding chop to already small waves. Rain and cloud cover increase, water temperatures climb to around 29°C, and the average swell height is only 0.4m (1.3ft). Isla Chepillo remains a low-energy, trade-wind-influenced bay for most of the year, and these months are best spent chasing micro-grovel sessions or simply enjoying the warm water.
