Best Surf Season (December - April)

La Barqueta lights up when the dry season settles over Panama's Pacific coast. From December through April, the northeast trade winds become the dominant weather maker, blowing from the north and offshore quarter and grooming the SSW-facing beach for long periods of time. During this window, ideal wind for surfing runs between 51 and 73 percent, reaching its peak in January and February. The swell is equally cooperative: almost all wave energy arrives from the SSW and SW, with average periods in the 12-14 second range. Heights are modest but rippable, with the majority of waves in the 0.5-1m (2-3ft) to 1-1.5m (3-5ft) range. This combination of offshore wind and consistent long-period swell produces the cleanest, most consistent surf of the year.

Fair Surf Season (April - May and November)

The shoulder months are a battle between the dying trades and the approaching wet season. April still sees a 51 percent chance of favorable wind, but the wind rose becomes more mixed as westerly and southwesterly components grow. May and November offer occasional clean sessions, especially in the early morning, and the swell actually gains size with average heights pushing 1.2m (4ft). If you are willing to work around onshore pulses, there are fun waves to be found, but the reliability drops off sharply compared to the heart of the dry season.

Low Surf Season (June - October)

From June through October, the Intertropical Convergence Zone sits overhead and the wind shifts round to the southwest and west, blowing directly onshore at La Barqueta. Ideal wind drops to just 33-36 percent, and the wave quality suffers badly, even though this is the largest swell season of the year. Average heights climb to 1.2-1.3m (4-4.3ft) and long-period SSW/SW groundswell is abundant, but the persistent onshore flow creates bumpy, blown-out conditions. Only transient high pressure or a fortuitous tropical cyclone track can align the winds and swell. It is the season for hardcore surfers willing to battle the chop for heavy, pushing waves.
