Best Surf Season (December - April)

Playa Madrono's surf year is written by the seasonal tug-of-war between dry offshore trade winds and the rainy, onshore southwest monsoon. From December through April, a strong pressure gradient across the region keeps the N, NNE, NW and NNW wind quadrants active, with ideal surfing wind clocking in at 51-76 percent. Swell heights average a dependable 3-4ft (1.0-1.1m) through this window, but the period evolution is crucial: trade windswell in December at around 10s gradually gives way to longer-period southern-hemisphere groundswell by March and April, when the period reaches 12.4-13.7s and the SSW/SW swell share expands to over half, then to nearly three-quarters, of the total energy. Minimal rain and warm water make this the most rewarding and consistent time of year for clean, rippable surf.

Fair Surf Season (May - August and November)

As the ITCZ shifts northward, the wet season brings a massive increase in long-period SSW/SW swell - often 90 percent or more of the wave energy - but also a significant increase in onshore SW/WSW winds. Ideal wind percentages hover between 47 and 60 percent from May through August, with the best conditions usually found on the dawn patrol before the daily sea breeze ruins the surface. Wave quality can still be very good, especially during 13-14s swell pulses, yet rain totals of 9-11mm/day and water temperatures near 28-29°C add a sticky tropical challenge. November is the bridge month back to clean offshore flow, with SSW swell still abundant and the wind heading in the right direction again.

Low Surf Season (September - October)

The weakest window of the year runs from September to October, when the rainy season reaches peak strength. Despite an almost absurd abundance of SSW/SW swell energy - around 94-97 percent of all wave energy - the onshore wind regime also peaks, and ideal surfing wind drops to just 33-37 percent. Southwest and west-southwest winds dominate, rainfall averages 9.8-11.6mm/day, and the combination of lumpy surface and heavy tropical showers puts a firm limit on surf quality. The swell period is still excellent at 13.2-13.5s, so the occasional dry northerly burst can unlock a fun session, but consistency is poor. For most surfers, September and October are the months to plan around.
