Playa Maria Chiquita seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (June - August)
Although Playa Maria Chiquita never sees the sort of heavy open-ocean groundswell that grips more exposed breaks, the healthiest surf window is centred on the North American summer. The North Atlantic High relaxes and the ITCZ pushes north, easing the northeast trade winds and allowing the beach to pick up more S/SW offshore wind. June records 30% ideal offshore wind, with July at 20% and August at 22% - all while average surf height sits near 3-3.5ft (0.9-1.1m) and average periods stay in the 7.7-8.3s range. The omnipresent NE trade swell is not the perfect angle for this NNW-facing beach, but when the south wind arrives it grooms the waves into clean, rippable peaks.
Fair Surf Season (May and September - November)
The shoulder months blend wet-season offshore flow with early pulses of winter north swell. Offshore wind percentages hold in the 17-25% range, but wave heights often hover around 2-3ft (0.6-0.9m) and periods remain short. These months can serve up the cleanest conditions of the year when the swell direction shifts into the N/NNW window, but consistency is low and the break often needs a little more energy to shine.
Low Surf Season (December - April)
Winter and early spring technically bring the biggest surf of the year - January averages 5ft (1.5m) - but it arrives from the NE/NNE quadrant and is generated by the same strong trade winds that blow straight onshore at this NNW-facing beach. The ideal offshore wind percentage collapses to 0-3% between January and March, leaving the surface lumpy and bumpy. There is size, but the combination of wrong-direction swell and relentless onshore wind makes quality very hard to find.
