Playa Raya seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (April - July)

Playa Raya's surf year is all about timing the southern-hemisphere storm track. Between April and July, average wave periods climb into the 13.5-14.1s range and the wave rose becomes dominated by genuine SSW/S groundswell - 58.9% of the wave energy in April and 92-96% from May through July. At the same time, offshore N/NNE/NNW flow still appears 50-67% of the time, enough to groom those long-period swells into clean, rippable walls. The beach is exposed to the south, so this is the only real window where the open Pacific lines up with the coastline. Expect lots of tropical rain and warm water, but the surf quality is at its annual peak.

Fair Surf Season (August - November)

From August through November, the southern-hemisphere swell train remains active, with SSW/S energy making up 82-97% of the wave rose and periods still a solid 12.3-13.5s. However, the Intertropical Convergence Zone settles over Panama and the winds become less reliable. Ideal surfing wind drops to 41% in September and just 37% in October, so many days are bumpy, textured and cross-shore. The waves are still there - often 3-5ft (1-1.5m) - but you need to chase early-morning offshore windows or periods when a transient high-pressure ridge pushes N/NNW wind back down the coast. November shows a clear improvement.

Low Surf Season (December - March)

December through March is the dry season and Playa Raya turns into a small, clean but less powerful playground. Offshore N/NNW trade winds blow often, with ideal wind percentages between 51-77%, yet the swell direction is mostly from N, NNE and NNW - the wrong side of the compass for a south-facing beach. Average wave periods drop to 9.1-12.4s and the true SSW/S energy percentage shrinks, especially in January (12.6%) and February (17%). The result is groomed, rideable but often gutless 2-4ft (0.5-1.2m) conditions. It is longboard season, not charging season.
