Best Surf Season (May - November)

For a beach that faces the SSE, the most consistent rideable swell arrives from the southern-hemisphere storm track between May and November. The ITCZ migrates north and the South Pacific westerlies generate frequent SSW/SW groundswell that lines up almost perfectly with Playa Teta. Average wave heights hover around 2ft (0.6m), but the prolonged 12-14s periods make every wave more organized than the raw number suggests. July and August stand out for the highest percentage of offshore NNW/NW wind, creating glassy mornings and rideable, fun-sized surf. This is not a big-wave destination; it is a grovel-to-midsize longboard town, but the consistency of direction and clean morning winds make it the closest thing to a reliable surf season.

Fair Surf Season (April & December)

April and December are transition months where the switch between the southern-hemisphere swell window and the local trade-wind regime creates a mixed bag. In April, SSW swell begins to build after months of northern windswell, but heights are still mostly under 2ft (0.6m) and the ocean is still finding its rhythm. December sees the first strong pulses of NNW trade windswell and clean offshore conditions, yet the northern/in-shadow swell direction and shorter 8-9s periods limit quality. If you score a storm pulse from the south during these windows, Playa Teta can turn on; otherwise expect inconsistent, small surf.

Low Surf Season (January - March)

January through March marks the heart of the dry season, when the northeast trade winds and strong Pacific high pressure lock in. While this delivers beautiful offshore NNW wind a large portion of the time, the swell direction is dominated by N, NNE and NNW windswell - a poor angle for a south-southeast-facing beach. Wave heights average just 2-3ft (0.5-0.9m) with periods of 7-9s, which translates into short-period, sectiony waves and lots of groveling. The lack of incoming SOUTH energy is the main problem; without it, Playa Teta is small and inconsistent. For those who just want clean, warm water and a fun longboard wave, it can still be enjoyable, but don't expect the ocean to roar to life.
