Playa Venao unfurls along Panama's Pacific coast as a sweeping crescent of golden sand, backdropped by lush, rolling hills that lend the break a sheltered, almost amphitheater-like feel. The nearby town of Venado pulses with a mellow, surf-centric energy, offering a cluster of laid-back lodgings where the rhythm of the tide dictates daily life. This is a beachbreak that welcomes all comers, from groms finding their feet to seasoned riders looking to uncork smooth, peeling lefts and rights. The wave here is a forgiving, playful beast, best awakened by a solid south swell. It starts to show its face at around two feet and can handle much larger, stacking up cleanly over a soft sand bottom that cushions any missteps. Low to mid tide is your sweet spot, and north winds groom the face to perfection, ironing out any chop for long, open rides. The surrounding hills act as a natural windbreak, keeping conditions surprisingly clean even when the trades blow elsewhere. Because of that consistent protection, Playa Venao has become a regular stage for local and regional surf contests, adding a spark of competitive fire to the otherwise unhurried atmosphere. Whether you’re in the water or watching from the shore, there’s a palpable sense of community and stoke here—a place where beginners feel right at home and everyone else feels lucky to be in the lineup.

Best Surf Season & Climatology

Best Surf Season (December - April)

The dry season is the golden window at Playa Venao. As the Intertropical Convergence Zone settles south of Panama and the North Atlantic high pressure builds, the trade-wind flow turns offshore from the north through the north-northeast. December records the highest ideal wind percentage of the year at 76 percent, and by March and April the average swell period climbs into the 12-14 second range while SSW and SW swells take over the wave rose. This combination sets up clean, long-period surf on the south-facing beach, with the best months running from December through April.
