Best Surf Season (May - October)
Pikinini sits on a west-facing coastline in the tropical western Pacific, and the surf calendar is governed by the seasonal tug-of-war between the southeast trades and the northwest monsoon. From May through October, the trades blow consistently from the east and southeast, producing offshore flow across this west-facing beach. This is the cleanest, most user-friendly window of the year. Average swell heights run 2-3ft (0.8-1m) with punchy 8-9s periods, so this is not a spot for XL sessions. But the combination of light offshore winds, warm 29-30C water, and rideable trade-wind swell makes it the most reliable stretch for actually getting waves at Pikinini.
Fair Surf Season (April & November)
The shoulder months of April and November are classic transition periods. As the prevailing winds shift between trade and monsoon regimes, the clean-wind percentage sits in the 45-47% range while average swell heights nudge back up to 3ft (1m) and periods stretch toward 10s. Some days deliver groomed, lined-up surf under easterly offshore breezes; other days the northwest monsoon leaks in and turns the lineup lumpy and onshore. Pick your windows carefully and these months can offer the best blend of size and shape.
Low Surf Season (December - March)
December through March is the northwest monsoon season across Papua New Guinea. This is when the data shows the biggest swells of the year at 4ft (1.2-1.3m) with longer 10-10.5s periods, but it comes at a serious cost. West, west-northwest, and northwest winds dominate, exactly the onshore directions for a beach facing west. The ideal wind statistic drops to just 25-35%, and the dominant NNE/NE swell is largely shadowed from this exposed west-facing aspect. The combination of onshore wind and directional mismatch means a lot of messy, lumpy surf. Occasional windows of easterly offshore flow can salvage a session, but consistency is poor. When we say low here, we mean low in clean, surfable quality, not necessarily low in raw swell height.
