January: The Monsoon's Peak Punch

January sits at the peak of the northwest monsoon and delivers the largest, most consistently directional swell window of the year. The average wave height checks in at 4.3ft (1.3m) and the average period at 10.4 seconds, putting Ral Island in the powerful long-period range. The swell rose tells the story: 83.9 percent of all wave energy arrives from the favorable N, NNE, NW and NNW quadrant, with NNE contributing 56.9 percent and N adding 14.8 percent. Much of this energy sits in the 3 to 5ft (1 to 1.5m) range, and a solid portion of those NNE and NNW swells pushes into 5 to 6.5ft (1.5 to 2m), giving the reefs real shape and punch.

The catch remains wind. The monsoon's NW, WNW and NNW flow dominates the wind rose, and since Ral Island faces north, those directions put an onshore chop on the face. Only 21 percent of observations are ideal for surfing. When a southerly or southwesterly wind line arrives, often in the wake of a tropical low or monsoon trough, the same swell turns clean and powerful. Expect air temperatures near 28.3°C, a steamy 29.7°C water temperature and heavy tropical rainfall at 7.8mm per day. Stay flexible and watch the wind shifts.
