Best Surf Season (December - March)
Wewak's northeast-facing coastline comes alive during the northwest monsoon, when the average swell height climbs to a solid 1.0m (3ft) and peak periods stretch to 10 seconds. The swell direction shifts predominantly to the N and NNE, with a healthy dose of NNW energy wrapping into the bay. The wind regime also becomes more favorable, with ideal surfing wind percentages peaking at 39-46% as the monsoon produces a strong cross-offshore component from the W and NW, alongside cleaner S/SW offshore breezes. Water temperatures hover near 29°C and air temps stay in the upper 20s, making for classic tropical surf conditions.
Fair Surf Season (April - May, September - November)
These transition months offer a mixed bag. April still sees a high percentage of optimal NE/NNE swell (79% of the wave energy), but wave heights taper to 0.8m (2.5ft) and the period drops as the trade winds begin to build. May through October is characterized by a shift to E and ENE short-period swell, with average heights around 0.7m (2ft) and periods under 8 seconds. Ideal wind percentages drop to 18-28%, but September and October see longer period pulses (9.4s) returning, and November sees a significant jump in ideal wind to 39% as the monsoon transitions back.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
The trade wind season brings the least favorable conditions to Wewak. The swell is overwhelmingly from the E and ENE, with periods dropping to 6.4-6.8s, producing choppy, weak, short-period windswell. Onshore and cross-shore winds dominate the region, with ideal surfing wind percentages falling to just 18-21%. Wave heights remain small at 0.7m (2ft) and the high energy E/ESE trades create messy, bumpy conditions. Unless you're desperate for a grovel, this is the time to wait out the flat spells and plan a trip elsewhere.
