The North Atlantic delivers its full fury during these months, with powerful cyclones spinning off the eastern seaboard and sending consistent, long-period swell towards the Portuguese coast. The combination of strong, deep lows and a favorable NAO index often results in a parade of ground swells from the WNW to NW, wrapping into the beach with size and energy. Wind patterns, influenced by the Azores High retreating south, shift to more favorable offshore regimes from the eastern quadrants (N to E) over 50% of the time, creating glassy conditions on the best days.

Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)

As the transition months, these periods see a gradual decline in swell frequency and intensity, but still offer solid opportunities. Spring brings a mix of fading winter swells and building windswell from the north, while September sees the first stirrings of autumn lows. Offshore wind windows remain decent, especially in April and September, with favorable directions prevailing 40-48% of the time. Waves tend to be punchy and fun-sized, ideal for performance surfing.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer settles in with the Azores High dominating, locking in a northerly wind regime that is often cross-shore or onshore. Swell becomes predominantly short-period windswell from the NW and NNW, with average heights dropping to 1.4-1.5m. While the beaches still receive waves, the quality is compromised by choppy conditions and inconsistent power. Offshore winds are rare, occurring only 33-36% of the time, making this a challenging period for surfers seeking clean, organized surf.
