Máncora, a sun-soaked fishing village on Peru’s northern coast, blends warm weather, laid-back energy, and a vibrant after-dark scene that attracts both locals and travelers. The surf here orbits a dependable left-hand point break that comes alive under northwest swells. When the swell pushes three feet or more, the wave peels over a mix of rock and sand, offering sections that can throw a tube when the sand caps the reef just right. Best conditions line up with low to high tide and southeast winds, grooming the face for a playful ride. Intermediate surfers will find this spot right in their wheelhouse—consistent and punchy enough to keep things interesting, but not without the occasional drop-in that comes with the territory. Crowds are the norm, especially during peak season when the beach fills with learners and holiday crowds sharing the lineup. But if you keep your head on a swivel and paddle with courtesy, you can still carve out your own share of (surprisingly solid) waves—and maybe a few new friends in the water.

Best Surf Season & Climatology

Best Surf Season (May - October)

Mancora is a spot where the Southern Hemisphere winter writes the cheque. From May through October, the South Pacific storm track cranks into gear, firing long-period groundswell towards the Peruvian coast. The wave rose data for these months is remarkable: 88-91% of all swell energy arrives from the SSW, with average heights holding at 6ft (1.8-1.9m) and periods right around 14 seconds. At the same time, the South Pacific subtropical high builds, and the pressure gradient along the coast delivers a persistent SSW/SW flow. For an NNW-facing beach, that flow is offshore and keeps the surface glassy. This is the most consistent, powerful and rideable window of the year, with plenty of 5-6.5ft (1.5-2m) waves and a good share of 6-8ft (2-2.5m) sets.
