Best Surf Season (December - March)

For a southwest-facing beach like Penascal, the surf season peaks in quality when the austral summer pressure gradient relaxes along the Peruvian coast. From December through March, the South Pacific high and the Humboldt Current still produce long-period SSW and SW groundswell, but the average height settles into a fun 4-6ft (1.2-1.8m) range. More importantly, January through March offer the highest likelihood of light offshore flow from the east and northeast, with ideal wind percentages reaching 1-2% -- still rare, but a significant advantage over the rest of the year. When a clean offshore window lines up with a 13-14 second SSW swell, Penascal delivers rippable, head-high-plus waves.

Fair Surf Season (April - May and October - November)

The transition months are a trade-off. April, May, October and November see average swell heights climbing or falling through the 5-6ft (1.5-1.8m) zone with powerful 13-13.6 second periods. The dominant SSW direction remains ideal, but the wind statistics show a stronger southerly push: S and SSW winds combine for roughly 85-90% of all readings, and ideal offshore wind drops to zero. Early mornings and occasional eddies can still produce workable walls, but the surface texture is usually lumpy.

Low Surf Season (June - September)

The austral winter brings the biggest and most consistent SSW groundswell of the year, with average heights around 6ft (1.9m) and periods of 12.8-13.2s. Unfortunately, this is also when the alongshore pressure gradient tightens and the onshore/cross-shore southerly flow becomes relentless. Ideal wind is observed zero percent of the time during these months, and the persistent S/SSW winds put the brakes on quality at the southwest-facing beach. The surf is rarely small, but it is often raw, windy and hard to read; call it low season for clean conditions rather than low season for size.
