January: The Longboarder's Summer Slumber

January is the middle of the southern summer and Pulpos is running on leftover Southern Ocean groundswell. The average swell height sits around 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m), and the 13.0s period keeps the waves moving with real long-period power. The direction is almost perfect: SSW delivers 71.3 percent of the swell, with 27.5 percent from the SW, and the bulk of the energy sits in the 3-5ft (1-1.5m) and 5-6ft (1.5-2m) ranges. The beach is exposed to just the right swells, but the wind tells a different story.

S, SSW and SW winds combine for nearly 86 percent of observations, and although most are light, they are onshore or side-onshore at a southwest-facing beach. Ideal offshore N-NE flow appears only 2 percent of the time. Still, mornings can be clean long enough for a few glassy waves before the sea breeze arrives. Air temperature averages 20.6°C, water temperature is 19.0°C, and rainfall is negligible at just 0.15mm/day - classic dry, warm Peruvian summer surf.
