Combined with consistent, long-period groundswells generated by Southern Hemisphere storms, this window delivers clean, well-shaped waves at Playa Avellanes. Average wave heights hover around 1.3-1.5m, periods range from 11.5 to 14.1 seconds, and wind ideal percentages often top 60%. This is when the spot truly shines, offering fun, rippable surf with occasional pumping sessions.

Fair Surf Season (May - August)

As the ITCZ shifts north, trade winds weaken and become more variable, but the swell machine keeps churning. Most energy arrives from the SSW, which wraps into the beach to produce consistent, powerful waves. Average heights climb to 1.5m with periods around 13-14 seconds. Morning offshore flows remain frequent, especially in July when wind ideal percentage hits 79%. Expect plenty of surfable days, though afternoon sea breezes can degrade conditions.

Low Surf Season (September - November)

The transition between seasons brings a breakdown in the trade wind regime. September and October see a drop in ideal wind frequency to 50-55%, as the ITCZ lingers and allows more onshore flow from the SW and W. Swell energy remains moderate, but the quality is often compromised by bumpy seas and occasional stormy intervals.
