Best Surf Season (October – March)

As the North Atlantic cranks up its storm engine, Playa del Castillo comes alive. From October through March, the average swell height consistently sits between 1.7m and 2.2m, with long-period energy (11–13 seconds) that sends powerful, well-organized lines into the bay. The dominant swell sources shift from WNW to NW and even NNW, but it's the occasional pure WSW-to-NW fetch that really gets this west-facing beach pumping. During these months, the wind blows offshore 24–31% of the time from the SW–WNW quadrant, carving clean, rippable faces. Cold fronts and deep lows spinning southeast of Greenland drive the action, and when the timing aligns, you get glassy mornings with shoulder-to-overhead sets – this is the prime window for big, hollow waves at Castillo.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

Spring and early autumn serve up a mixed bag. In April, average swell drops to 1.9m and period falls to 10.9s, yet the occasional NW groundswell still wraps in. The wind cooperates only 13% of the time, but the lulls between north-northeasterly breezes can produce fun, punchy sessions. September sees a resurgence: swell period climbs back to 10.0s, average height sits at 1.4m, and offshore wind jumps to 23%. Early autumn lows are starting to form, delivering clean, waist-to-chest-high waves on the better days. These months are transitional – not consistent, but with careful timing you can score good surf.

Low Surf Season (May – August)

Summer is the quiet season for Playa del Castillo. From May through August, the average swell height hovers between 1.4m and 1.6m, and period drops to a weak 7.7–9.5s – mostly short-period, windswell-driven slop. The dominant swell direction is persistently from the N to NNW, which offers zero exposure to optimal W/SW energy. To make matters worse, offshore wind conditions occur only 4–10% of the time; the prevailing NNE trades howl at 20–40 km/h, raking the surface into choppy, onshore mess. High pressure parked over the Bay of Biscay often kills any real swell generation. If you're desperate, there are tiny, groveling waves at high tide, but this is the time to travel or take up windsurfing instead.
