Best Surf Season & Climatology

Best Surf Season (May - October)

While Playa Grande sees its largest average swell heights during the winter months of December through March, these same months are plagued by persistent onshore trade winds from the NNE and NE, blowing directly into the beach's NNW exposure. The result is mostly choppy, blown-out conditions, with the wind ideal for surfing exactly 0% of the time. The real window of opportunity opens during the rainy season from late spring into early autumn. As the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) shifts northward, the dominant wind regime relaxes, allowing for a higher frequency of southerly and southwesterly breezes. These offshore winds groom the ever-present northeast trade swell into clean, rideable waves. While the average wave height drops to around 1.0-1.4m during this period, the conditions become much more enjoyable. June and July stand out with the best combination of upward of 30% offshore wind frequency and waist-to-chest high swell.

Fair Surf Season (April & November)

The transition months of April and November offer a mixed bag. The trade winds are beginning to weaken or re-strengthen, and sporadic offshore wind events become more common (3-16% ideal). Swell heights during these months average between 1.1-1.3m, and when a weather system aligns correctly, you can score fun, groomed waves with lighter winds. However, consistency is lacking, and you'll need to be ready to pounce when the magic combination of a northward shift in the wind and a pulse of NE swell arrives.

Low Surf Season (December - March)

December through March represents the heart of the dry season for Panama's Pacific coast. The powerful northeast trade winds dominate, blowing constantly from the NNE and NE at 20-40 kph. This creates a nearly constant onshore wind at Playa Grande's NNW-facing beach, rendering the waves choppy and unruly almost all the time. Although the average swell height peaks at 1.6-1.8m and periods hover around 8 seconds, the quality is severely diminished. The wind is ideal for surfing only 0-3% of the time, making this a period for the hardcore or those willing to hunt for sheltered corners.
