Best Surf Season (January - March)

Playa Valor is a fickle, micro-wave haven that rarely breaks above knee-high. The best window falls during the early months of the year when the North Pacific subtropical high strengthens and drives intermittent offshore winds from the N and NNE. This combo occasionally polishes the water's surface enough to reveal long-period, waist-high lines from an SSW or SW angle — the only direction that jives with the southwest-facing beach. But don't be fooled: the average wave height hovers around a paltry 0.3m, and the 'ideal' wind window clocks in at a meager 1% of the time. When the stars align, a groomed, playful knee-to-thigh-high wave might roll through, but consistency is almost nonexistent.

Fair Surf Season (April - June)

As spring progresses, the trade winds pick up and the N/NNE offshore flow weakens, replaced by a mixed bag of SE to SSW breezes that often turn onshore. Swell from the deep South Pacific arrives with impressive periods of 14-15s, yet the energy is so filtered by distance that wave heights rarely nudge above 0.5m. The result is a frustrating tease: long, glassy lines that barely wrap into the bay, often too small to ride. If you're a longboarder with a tolerance for micro-groveling, you might find a few ankle-biters on a dropping tide when the wind goes light.

Low Surf Season (July - December)

The second half of the year is dominated by the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) and a persistent onshore flow from the SW and SSW. These winds destroy what little shape exists, chopping up the already tiny swell into messy, unrideable foam. July through October bring the highest percentages of SSW swell — up to 77% — but the height remains stuck at 0.3m, and the wind is almost always cross or onshore. November and December see a slight increase in N/NNE winds, but the swell continues to shrink (average 0.2m in December). The low surf season is exactly that: flat, blown out, and reserved for beachgoers and paddleboarders. For surfers, it is a time to check the long-range charts and hope for a rare pulse of tropical storm energy that might break the monotony.
