October: The North Atlantic Wakes Up

October is the true transition back to the gold standard. The North Atlantic roars to life during the month and we see a sharp jump in average surf heights along the Portuguese coastline in response. This is due to a climatological increase in the number of strong extratropical storms aligning with the returning jet stream. At Amado, the average swell height rises to 1.8m (6ft), and the period stretches to 11.4s-a clear sign that long-period groundswell is back in the mix. The northwest direction continues to dominate at 38.0 percent, but there are healthy chunks of west-northwest (17.7%) and north-northwest (16.5%) energy, giving Amado a highly favorable combination of swell direction and power. The 1.5-2.5m (5-8ft) range becomes well-represented.

Wind conditions improve further, with the ideal offshore wind percentage climbing to 23 percent. The north-northwest wind still leads at 25.3 percent, but it's less dominant than in the summer months, and the east-southeast and east winds become a more consistent presence. When a low-pressure system swings by and winds shift to offshore, Amado can deliver excellent, hollow waves under sunny autumn skies. The sea surface is still warm from summer at 19.2°C, air temps average 19.4°C, and precipitation increases to 2.23 mm/day, which brings more frontal passages and storm systems. The combination of building swell, warm water, and improving winds makes October one of the best months of the year.
