Amoreira seasonal overview
The surf year at Amoreira is dictated by the North Atlantic storm track. The beach faces West-North-West, which makes it beautifully exposed to the long-period groundswell that storms spin up across the open Atlantic. Through autumn and winter, a parade of extratropical cyclones moves east toward the Bay of Biscay and the Portuguese coast, sending consistent NW to WNW swell straight into the beach. The main challenge is wind: whenever low pressure passes close, the wind clocks northwesterly and ruins the shape. The best days are those when high pressure settles over Iberia or over the Azores, allowing lighter easterly, southerly or southwesterly flow to groom the faces. The North Atlantic Oscillation plays a role here too; in negative phases, the storm track tends to sag south, delivering more direct westerly energy to Portugal, while strongly positive phases often deflect the biggest lows toward the British Isles.
Best Surf Season (October - March)
October through March is the heart of the season. Average surf heights range from 6-8ft (1.8-2.4m), with periods holding between 11.5 and 13.1 seconds. NW and WNW swell dominate, which is exactly what this west-northwest-facing beach is built to handle. The ideal wind percentage is high for the year, from 26 percent in March to 36 percent in December, and the combination of solid groundswell and cooler, more unsettled weather creates the most powerful and consistent surf of the year. Water temperatures sit between 15.0°C and 18.6°C, so a good 4/3 wetsuit is essential.
Fair Surf Season (April - June and September)
April, May, June and September form the shoulder season. Average surf drops to 4-6ft (1.2-1.8m) and average periods trail off to between 9.2 and 11.2 seconds. There are still rideable, occasionally excellent days, especially in April and September when fresh Atlantic lows produce punchy groundswell. The trade-off is that the northerly wind machine starts to strengthen, and ideal wind windows fall to between 11 and 19 percent. Clean mornings and lighter wind days are the windows to target, while water temperatures climb into the 16.0°C to 18.3°C range.
Low Surf Season (July - August)
July and August are the summer doldrums. Average surf height sits at a modest 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m) and periods shorten to 8.4-8.9 seconds, meaning more locally driven windswell than true groundswell. The swell direction is locked into the NW and NNW quadrants, and those same directions are the most common wind directions, making conditions bumpy and sectiony. Ideal wind windows bottom out at just 7-9 percent. It is still possible to find waist-high clean waves on a glassy dawn, but this is the low season for quality surf at Amoreira. Water temperature is at its warmest, around 17.9°C.
