Best Surf Season (October - March)
Canide Norte is a west-facing stretch of the Portuguese Atlantic coast, and it comes alive when the autumn and winter storm track locks onto the Iberian Peninsula. From October through March average swell heights sit between 1.4m and 1.8m (4.6-5.9ft), with periods of 11 to nearly 13 seconds. That is real, long-period ground swell generated by extratropical cyclones tracking across the North Atlantic. The dominant WNW-to-NW energy lines up almost perfectly with the beach, and because high pressure frequently builds over the continent, offshore winds from the eastern quadrant (ENE, E, ESE and SE - the ONO/O/OSO/SO of local forecasts) keep the waves clean for a surprisingly high share of the time, often 40-50% in the heart of winter. The best windows usually come as low pressure exits toward the Bay of Biscay and the pressure gradient allows a light offshore flow to groom the surf. The result is punchy, powerful, hollow-lined waves on the sandbars, with December and January offering the most consistent pulse.
Fair Surf Season (April, May and September)
The shoulder months still offer plenty of rideable surf, but with a noticeable step down in size and power. Average swell heights ease to 1.1-1.3m (3.6-4.3ft), and periods shorten to around 10-11s. The same WNW/NW/W direction mix dominates, but a strengthening northerly wind regime starts to hurt wave quality. Ideal offshore winds are present only 21-28% of the time, so you have to pick your windows carefully. Early mornings and days with a weak easterly gradient can still produce clean, fun-sized waves, especially in April and early September before the summer wind pattern fully takes over.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the slow season at Canide Norte. As the Azores High builds north, the main North Atlantic storm track shifts toward Iceland and the British Isles, and Portugal is left with mostly short-period, wind-driven NW swell. Average heights drop to 0.9-1.0m (3.0-3.3ft), periods fall to 8.8-9.3s, and the daily NNW wind becomes dominant. Ideal offshore flow occurs only 10-13% of the time, which means many days are small, bumpy and sectiony. June is the pick of the low season, while July and August are best for early-morning logs and patience. The ocean is still alive, but it rarely delivers the kind of powerful, clean surf that makes this spot special.
