Costa da Caparica seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
The North Atlantic roars to life during October and the surf at Costa da Caparica catches the full brunt of it. From October through March, average swell heights sit in the 1.5-2.0m (5-7ft) range with periods of 11-13 seconds. These are not just average waves; these are powerful, long-period groundswells generated by extratropical cyclones marching across the Atlantic. The west-southwest exposure lines up best when the swell drops in from the W-WSW window, and while WNW/NW pulses dominate the statistics, the long-period energy still wraps into the bay and delivers consistent, quality surf. Add offshore wind windows from the E/NE that are present around 40-46% of the time, and you get the classic Portuguese winter recipe: solid swell, cleaner line-ups, and world-class potential.
Fair Surf Season (April, May and September)
As winter lows start to retreat, the average size fades to 1.1-1.5m (3.5-5ft) and periods drop to 10-11 seconds. April and September are genuine shoulder months: the North Atlantic still throws clusters of groundswell, especially in April, while May relies more on inconsistent NW/NW swell. Wind quality is more variable as the seasonal nortada begins to strengthen, but mornings with light east/northeast winds can still offer clean, rippable waves. These months favor a longer board and a patient approach.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the doldrums at Costa da Caparica. Average swell height drops to 1.0-1.1m (3-4ft), periods sink into the 8.7-9.4s range, and the wind is ideal only 23-27% of the time. The Portuguese 'nortada' - a strong north/northwest wind - becomes the dominant feature, blowing over 50% of the time in June and July. Waves are usually small, windblown NW windswell with occasional clean conditions in the early morning. If the surf is on in summer, it is almost always a bonus, not a guarantee.
