Cova da Alfarroba seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
The North Atlantic's storm track is the engine that drives Cova da Alfarroba, and the best surf of the year arrives between October and March. Average swell heights run from 7ft (2.1m) to 9ft (2.8m) with periods often exceeding 12 seconds. This is when extratropical cyclones spinning up off Greenland and Newfoundland aim long-period NNW, NW and WNW groundswell at Portugal's west coast. The beach is directly exposed to the north, so these are the angles that shape the best waves. Wind is the critical filter: ideal offshore flow from the south/southwest flows between 21% and 27% of the time, usually ahead of cold fronts. Those frontal windows produce the classic firing days - big, lined-up, heavy surf under autumn-winter skies.
Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)
The shoulder months offer a mixture of winter leftovers and summer patterns. April still holds 7ft (2.1m) average swell with 11.2-second periods, while May fades to 6ft (1.8m) and 9.9 seconds. September marks the reverse progression, as the first autumn lows push average swell back to 6ft (1.7m) and periods above 10 seconds. The problem is wind: the northerly gradient strengthens in spring and is still strong in September, so ideal S/SSW/SW offshore flow hovers around 19-20%. When the wind behaves, Cova da Alfarroba can offer excellent, rippable waves - but expect a higher percentage of onshore days.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the quietest chapter at Cova da Alfarroba. From June through August, average swell drops to 5ft (1.5m), average periods fall into the 8.6-9.2 second wind-swell range, and the direction becomes almost exclusively NNW/NW. Meanwhile, the northerly wind machine ramps up dramatically, with NNW winds blowing 51-63% of the time, leaving ideal offshore winds at just 9-16%. It's not completely flat - there are small waves - but the quality is often chopped by direct onshore winds. Only the most dedicated grovelers, or surfers who can pick dawn patrol windows, will find magic in the summer months.
