January: Deep-Winter Power

January is the heart of the North Atlantic surf season at Espinho. Average swell clocks in at 6ft (1.8m), with a mean period of 12.7s, solidly in the powerful long-period window. The wave rose is dominated by WNW swell at 46.7%, with W at 15.8% and NW at 16.1%, meaning almost every significant pulse arrives with a favorable west component for this west-facing beach. Nearly a third of all observations fall in the 5-8ft (1.5-2.5m) range, and there is plenty of 3-5ft (1-1.5m) surf plus occasional XXL days above 8ft (2.5m) when deep Atlantic cyclones align their fetch toward Iberia.

On the wind side, January is one of the cleanest months, with 47% of conditions rated ideal. Offshore flow from the northeast and east quadrant, particularly ENE, E, and ESE, combines with a slowly moving high-pressure ridge over the continent to groom the WNW swell. Westerly and southwesterly winds are present but less dominant than at many coastal spots. The average air temperature sits at 10.4°C and water temperature is 13.6°C, so a solid winter wetsuit is essential. With rain averaging 4.24 mm/day, expect occasional frontal passages to stir up new swell before clearing to crisp offshore mornings.
