Best Surf Season (October - March)
The North Atlantic storm track shifts south and activates during this window, funnelling consistent long-period groundswell from the west and northwest directly into the WNW-facing beach at Foz do Lizandro. Average wave heights range from 6.5-8.5ft (2-2.6m) with dominant periods of 12-13 seconds, delivering the kind of power and shape that separates a good day from a great day. Offshore wind opportunities are double what you get in summer, running at 18-25% of the time, while cooler air and rain are a fair trade for the quality on offer.
Fair Surf Season (April, May, September)
The shoulder months are a transition between the deep low pressure systems of winter and the stagnant highs of summer. April and September still enjoy solid groundswell in the 5.3-6.6ft (1.6-2m) range with periods of 10.5-11.1 seconds, offering rippable, powerful waves on the better sand setups. The wind becomes less perfect-especially as the nortada strengthens-but the warmer water and lighter crowds often make these months the smart surfer's pick.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer on the Portuguese coast is dominated by the Azores High, which locks in the nortada-a persistent side-shore NNW wind-and pushes the storm track far to the north. Average wave heights sink to 4.5-5ft (1.4-1.5m) with periods dropping below 9 seconds, and ideal offshore wind windows plummet to 3-5%. The surf is fun for longboards and foamies in the early glassy mornings, but the summertime Atlantic simply doesn't deliver the power this stretch of coast is known for.
