Best Surf Season (October - March)
The North Atlantic switches on during this window, and Furadouro sits right in the firing line. Climatological lows rolling east across the Atlantic pump consistent groundswell toward Portugal, with average wave heights running 4-6ft (1.2-1.8m) and periods often in the 11-13 second range - powerful, organized lines that wrap straight into the sandbar. The North Atlantic Oscillation is the big lever; negative phases tend to push the storm track further south and deliver bigger, more consistent WNW/NW groundswell to the Portuguese coast. As the Azores High retreats, frontal systems push across Iberia, bringing both the swell and the shifting pressure gradients that create clean offshore wind windows. December through February are the standouts, but October's jump and November's ramp are unmistakable. For maximum size, period and groomed conditions, set your schedule for these months.
Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)
These shoulder months serve up an inconsistent mix. The Atlantic storm track weakens, wave heights settle into the 3-4ft (0.9-1.2m) range and periods hover around 10 seconds - fun and rippable, but less menacing. As spring high pressure builds, the northerly wind flow strengthens and ideal surf windows drop to just 20-27% of the time. Still, when a late-season low sneaks through, the WNW/NW swells can produce punchy, well-shaped peaks at Furadouro under increasingly warm skies and water temperatures in the mid-teens Celsius.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the quiet season. The Azores High locks in over the North Atlantic, deflecting storm tracks far to the north and leaving Furadouro with a diet of small, short-period NW/WNW windswell. Average heights fall to around 3ft (0.9m), periods shrink to the 8-9 second range, and a relentless NNW flow (often 40-50% of the wind distribution) chops up the surface. With ideal surfing conditions only 8-12% of the time, it is a longboard and dawn-patrol season rather than a serious wave-chasing period.
