Lagido seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
The North Atlantic storm track brings Lagido to life from October through March. Average swell heights range from a solid 6.9ft (2.1m) in October up to 9.2ft (2.8m) in January, while average periods sit in the powerful 11-13 second range. The dominant energy arrives from the north, north-northwest and northwest quadrants, directly feeding this north-facing beach. These deep winter lows also drag S/SW winds across the Portuguese coast ahead of their fronts, creating the offshore conditions Lagido needs to stand up clean. On the flip side, N and NNW winds frequently spoil the surface when the pressure gradient tightens. Water temperatures hover around 14-18C, so it is still a wetsuit job, but the combination of long-period groundswell and offshore wind makes this the most consistent and rewarding time of year.
Fair Surf Season (April - May and September)
The shoulder months earn their keep with smaller but still rippable surf. Swell averages fall to around 5.6-6.9ft (1.7-2.1m), and periods drop to 10-11s, though the NW/NNW groundswell train remains reliable. Wind becomes the main variable: NNW north winds strengthen as the Azores High builds, but passing frontal systems still offer enough S/SW offshore days. April, May and September each sit at about 20 percent ideal wind, meaning if you pick your windows wisely, you can find clean conditions with far less crowd and warmer sun on the sand.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the quiet season at Lagido. The Azores High settles over the North Atlantic, suppressing the storm track and reducing average swell to 4.9-5.2ft (1.5-1.6m) with short periods of 8.6-9.2s. The wind rose tells the story: NNW winds blow over 50 percent of the time, which is directly onshore for this spot and leaves most days choppy and bumpy. Only 10-16 percent of the time does Lagido see ideal offshore winds. A rare S/SW breeze or an early morning glass-off can still make the summer fun-size waves work, but consistent quality is hard to find.
