Best Surf Season (October - March)
Lagoa de Albufeira faces west, which means it needs the North Atlantic's winter energy to truly light up. From October through March the average swell height climbs to 1.5-2.0m (5-7ft) with periods in the 11-13s range, as extratropical cyclones marching across the North Atlantic send powerful, long-period W and WNW swells straight into the beach. In years when the North Atlantic Oscillation favors a negative phase, the storm track is pushed south and the Portuguese coast becomes a magnet for strong, well-organized groundswell. The percentage of ideal surfing wind also jumps to 22-31% during this window, with ENE/E/ESE/SE offshore flow keeping the west-facing sandbars cleaner. This is the most consistent, powerful and rewarding stretch of the year.
Fair Surf Season (April & September)
April and September are shoulder months with plenty of WNW-NW swell direction for a west-facing beach, but the average period backs off to roughly 10-11s and the average size drops to 1.1-1.5m (3-5ft). The strengthening spring northerlies in April and the lingering summer northerlies in September make wave quality inconsistent. Still, the first Atlantic lows in September and the final winter pulses in April can produce clean, head-high sessions between the wind events.
Low Surf Season (May - August)
Summer brings a dramatic slowdown at Lagoa de Albufeira. The average swell height sinks to 1.0-1.2m (3-4ft) with short-period 8.7-10.0s swell, while the North Atlantic storm track retreats and the Azores High takes control. NNW and NW winds blow for a large majority of the time, much of it sideshore to onshore, and true offshore E/SE flow is almost nonexistent. The result is small, wind-affected, groveling surf - only the occasional lucky summer NW pulse makes this west-facing beach worthwhile.
