Leja da Palmeira seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (October - March)

The year at Leja da Palmeira is driven by the North Atlantic. From October through March, the average swell height climbs to 6.5-8.5ft (2.0-2.6m), with wave periods of 11-13s, and the northwest-to-west direction fed by extratropical cyclones is exactly what this west-facing stretch of coast needs. The Azores High retreats southward and the NAO often turns negative, sending storm track after storm track toward the Iberian Peninsula. Add in more frequent offshore and easterly wind windows - December in particular shows 49 percent ideal wind - and you have the full spectrum of pumping Leja: heavy, throwing walls and long-period groundswell.

Fair Surf Season (April - May and September)

April, May and September form the bridge between winter and summer. Average wave heights drop to 5-6ft (1.6-1.9m), periods ease to 10-11s, and while NW and WNW swell still dominate, the shorter period takes some of the punch out of the waves. The wind regime is also less reliable: the northerly wind machine begins to spin up, cutting the ideal-wind percentage to between 24 and 30 percent. These months can still be very good when a late-season low or early-season front delivers a clean long-period swell, but you will need to pick your windows.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

The summer months are the quiet period. With the Azores High firmly installed over the North Atlantic, storm activity is suppressed and Leja da Palmeira sees average swell heights of only 4.5-5ft (1.4-1.5m) and periods of 8.5-9.2s. The dominant NW and NNW swell is mostly short-period windswell, while the persistent northerly and northwesterly winds - NNW wind frequencies above 40 percent in July and August - make conditions bumpy, cross-shore and rarely glassy. Expect small, textural waves and a lot of time spent checking the forecast; the odd summer NW pulse can still produce fun waves, but this is far from the beach's prime season.
