Best Surf Season (October - March)
Matadouro is a west-facing stretch of coastline that comes alive when the North Atlantic storm track points straight at Portugal. From October through March, the average swell height sits between 6.5 and 8.5ft (2.0-2.6m) and the average period regularly climbs into the 11-13s range. Long-period groundswell from the WNW and NW windows marches in with real power, while WSW and W swells fill in the gaps. Ideal offshore flow from ENE/E/ESE/SE occurs 20-27% of the time, often under high pressure over the Iberian Peninsula. This is the prime window for Matadouro to show its best shape: hollow, heavy and lined-up.
Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)
The shoulder months are a transition between the winter groundswell machine and the summer windswell regime. April still averages a solid 6.5ft (2.0m) at 11s, and September begins to see the first real autumn pulses, but the percentage of clean offshore wind drops and the NNW wind machine starts to dominate. Surf remains rideable and occasionally excellent, especially in the early morning or when a strong easterly sets up, but consistency and raw power are below winter standards.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
The summer months are the worst of the year at Matadouro. The Azores High builds in, the storm track retreats to the high latitudes, and the average wave height slips to 4.5-5ft (1.4-1.5m) with periods under 9-9.2s. The swell that does arrive is mostly short-period NNW and NW windswell, and the prevailing NNW wind blows 40-60% of the time, making conditions lumpy and difficult. Only a rare morning of light east wind or a rogue longer-period swell will produce genuinely good surf. This is the time to be a fair-weather surfer, not a brave one.
