Best Surf Season (October - March)
Mira is a west-facing sandbar beast that comes alive when the North Atlantic starts throwing real muscle. From October through March, the average surf size sits in the 6-8ft (1.8-2.4m) range and the average period runs between 11 and 13 seconds, with plenty of powerful, long-period groundswell unloading on the beach. The same winter storms that batter the Bay of Biscay send long-period WNW and NW swell straight into this stretch of the Portuguese coast, and because the beach faces west, west-angled swells wrap in with surprising consistency. The ideal wind window also peaks during these months: offshore winds from the east through southeast blow roughly 40-50 percent of the time, often in the wake of cold fronts or when a continental high sets up over Iberia. When the NAO tilts negative and the storm track sags south toward Portugal, Mira can be truly world-class.
Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)
The shoulder months mark a transition from the deep winter grind to the summer slop. April still delivers average heights around 6ft (1.8m) and periods near 11s, but the wind consistency fades as the Azores High begins to build. May and September are trickier: the Atlantic still sends periodic NW and WNW swells, but the average period drops to 9-10s and northerly winds start dominating the daily pattern. Early mornings and offshore E/SE days can turn Mira on, especially in September when the first autumnal lows brush the coast, but you will need patience and a bit of luck to find clean, rippable waves.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer at Mira is the classic Iberian low season. The Azores High parks over the North Atlantic and the storm track retreats toward Iceland, starving the coast of consistent groundswell. Average wave heights fall to 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m) and periods shrink to 8-9s, while persistent NNW/N winds blow nearly half the time, chopping up what little swell arrives. Water temperatures climb to 17-18C (63-64F) and air temps into the low-to-mid 20s, but the trade-like north wind and small, weak swells mean it is mostly longboard and grovel-board territory. If you are chasing quality, July and August are the weakest months of the year.
