January: Atlantic Fury at Full Roar

January is the heart of Pedra Branca's winter season. The North Atlantic is in full swing, and the average wave height climbs to 8-10ft (2.4-3.0m) with a long-period pulse of 13 seconds. The dominant swell directions are NW and WNW, backed up by NNW and W, which means the west-facing beach is wide open to the best angles of the winter swell window. Much of this energy arrives in the solid-to-heavy band between 5-8ft (1.5-2.5m), and during more active periods it pushes well into 8ft+ (2.5m+) territory.

Wind is the key variable, and January offers the highest chance of clean conditions locally. Offshore flow from the ENE, E, ESE and SE occurs around a quarter of the time, giving 26% ideal surf windows. That said, the prevailing background wind is still from the north-northwest, and when the Atlantic high squeezes tightly against Iberia, a cold NNW 'nortada' can put a heavy texture on what would otherwise be a world-class wave. Air temperatures around 11.5°C, water at 14.4°C, and daily rainfall of 2.49mm mean winter rubber is mandatory, but if you catch an east-wind day after a deep low tracks north of Scotland, Pedra Branca will be holding serious, grinding walls.
