Ponta do Pargo seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
The North Atlantic is in full roar from October through March, making this the clear window for chasing waves at Ponta do Pargo. Average open-ocean swell runs 6-9ft (1.8-2.7m) with periods of 11.5-12.9s, driven by a parade of extratropical cyclones along the mid-Atlantic storm track. Because the spot faces west, the W, WSW, WNW and NW groundswells that dominate this period hit the coast with maximum exposure and power. Ideal offshore winds from the E/ENE/ESE/SE quadrants occur 35-45% of the time, often in the high-pressure wake of passing fronts, which is why the winter months deliver the most high-quality surf. This is the time to book a swell trip.
Fair Surf Season (April, May & September)
April and May are the fading tail of the swell year: average heights ease to 5-7ft (1.5-2.1m) and periods drop to 10.0-11.2s, but there are still clean, manageable days as the Azores High begins to push north. September is the mirror image, as the first autumn lows and Cape Verde hurricane swells start to break the summer lull. Ideal winds run 29-46% in these months, and with warm water in September and comfortable springtime air in May, these transition months offer some of the most pleasant, crowd-free surfing.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
June, July and August form the annual low tide mark for Ponta do Pargo. Average swell heights fall to just 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m) and periods sag into the 8.5-9.3s range, with the swell direction clocking into a distinctly N/NNE windswell regime. True long-period W/WNW/NW groundswell is rare, and the spot relies on summer pulses from the north and east. Still, the trade-wind pattern often keeps conditions clean, and ideal offshore/easterly winds are present 34-43% of the time. Not a time for big-wave dreams, but fine for groveling on a fish when everything lines up.
