Praia das Bicas seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
The exposed west-facing orientation of Praia das Bicas puts it squarely in the crosshairs of the North Atlantic storm track. From October through March, average swell heights climb into the 1.5-2.0m (5-7ft) range and periods routinely stretch into the 11-13s bracket, delivering powerful and organized groundswell. The dominant WNW, NW, and W swell directions are exactly what this beach responds to, and the increased frequency of offshore ENE-E-ESE-SE winds during winter creates the most consistent high-quality sessions of the year. December and January are the peak months, especially when a negative North Atlantic Oscillation pattern steers low pressure closer to Portugal.
Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)
April and May are transition months. The ocean is still releasing some W/NW groundswell, but heights drop to around 1.2-1.5m (4-5ft) and periods shorten. The surf is rideable, often fun-sized, but wind quality becomes less reliable as the Azores High begins to build and northerly winds increase. September is the other transition window: the first Atlantic lows of autumn start to organize, periods stretch back out toward 10.5s, and the water is at its warmest. The catch is that the wind is still mostly from the north, so the best waves usually arrive at dawn or on the rare days when an easterly gradient develops.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the slow season at Bicas. The Azores High bulges northward, forcing the storm track away from Portugal and shrinking the average swell to around 1.0-1.1m (3-4ft) with periods of 8-9s. Swell direction remains locked in from the NW and WNW, but most of that energy is short-period, wind-driven swell rather than meaningful groundswell. At the same time, the Iberian thermal low pumps a persistent NNW/NW wind that blows cross-shore and onshore at this west-facing beach. Combined, these conditions leave Praia das Bicas small, bumpy, and marginal unless a lucky late-summer hurricane or early-autumn swell sneaks through.
