Praia das Macas seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic roars to life during the autumn and winter months, and Praia das Macas sits right in the firing line. As the Azores High weakens and polar low pressures track south along the European seaboard, the north-west-facing beach receives consistent, long-period groundswell from the W, WNW, NW and NNW. When the NAO index flips negative, the storm track sags south toward Iberia and delivers even more energy to this stretch of coast. Average swell heights between October and March range from 2.0m (6.6ft) to 2.6m (8.5ft) with periods of 11-13s, meaning powerful, organized lines wrapping into the bay. Ideal wind days are also slightly more frequent than in summer, especially in December and January when offshore flows from the west/southwest quadrant grace the coast. This is the time to chase Praia das Macas at its best.

Fair Surf Season (April, May and September)

Surf quality remains worthwhile but becomes less consistent during the transitional shoulder months. April and September still see average swell heights around 1.6-2.0m (5.2-6.6ft) with periods of 10-11s, and the occasional autumn or spring storm can inject a punchy groundswell. However, the blossoming northerly wind regime starts to create bumpy surfaces, especially in May when the north-northwest wind blows over 40% of the time. Surfers should pick their windows carefully and head out on the lighter mornings.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer is the sleepy season at Praia das Macas. The Azores High locks in over the North Atlantic, pushing the storm track far to the north and leaving the Portuguese coast with mainly small, short-period swell. Average heights drop to 1.4-1.5m (4.6-4.9ft) and periods fall to 8.5-9.2s, often producing weak, sectiony waves. To make matters worse, the prevailing NNW wind is strongly onshore, blowing 50-65% of the time and chopping up the surface. Only a handful of days each month, usually with southwest or west winds, deliver clean, rideable surf.
