Best Surf Season (October - March)
The North Atlantic is fully awake through the winter half-year, and Praia dos Ingleses feels every pulse of it. Climatologically, October marks the first serious return of long-period groundswell as the Icelandic Low deepens and extratropical storms spin up along the Atlantic storm track. The averages tell the story: monthly mean swell heights run 1.4-1.8m (4.5-6ft) with periods of 11-12.7s, and favorable offshore winds blow 44-48% of the time. The biggest, most consistent waves are usually delivered by W and WSW groundswell, though WNW and NW swells dominate the records and still wrap nicely into this west-southwest-facing beach. When a cold front clears and high pressure builds, the accompanying NNE-to-E wind turns the ocean into clean, lined-up waves. This is the time to plan around Praia dos Ingleses.
Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)
The shoulder months are a study in mixed signals. As spring wears on, the Atlantic storm track starts to lift north, average swell heights ease to 1.1-1.3m (3.5-4.5ft) and periods drop slightly below the long-period threshold. The wind is still variable and the percentage of clean, offshore days falls into the mid-to-high 30s. In September, the ocean wakes up again, with average periods climbing back over 10s and autumn storms beginning to fill in the western swell window. You can score fun waves, especially with W/SW pulses and morning E winds, but you need to be selective.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is defined by the Azores High. The high pressure system sits over the eastern Atlantic, deflecting the main storm track away from Portugal and setting up persistent northerly flow along the coast. Swell heights bottom out around 0.9-1.0m (3ft), periods hover in the short-to-average 8.8-9.3s range, and the majority of surf is NW/WNW windswell rather than true groundswell. Praia dos Ingleses can still offer clean, playful conditions when the morning E/NNE offshore breeze lines up the small NW swell, but this is not the season for serious power. The low season is best saved for travel otherwise.
