Salgueiros seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
The prime window at Salgueiros runs from October through March, with December and January sitting at the top of the pile. During these months the North Atlantic storm track is active, producing average swell heights around 5-6ft (1.5-1.8m) and dominant periods of 11-13s. Swell direction is overwhelmingly from the WNW, NW, and W quadrants - exactly what this west-facing beach needs. The offshore wind percentage rises to 39-49%, providing the highest number of clean, well-ordered days. When a negative NAO phase locks in, the Portuguese coast gets a constant conveyor belt of strong lows and long-period W/NW groundswell. Salgueiros is at its best, with powerful peaks reeling down the sandbars.
Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)
The shoulder months offer a mix of smaller, less consistent surf but still plenty of rideable days. In April and May the swell drops down to 4-4.5ft (1.1-1.3m) and period shortens to 10-11s; in September the same numbers return as autumn begins. Swell direction remains favorable, but the wind is more often from the northerly quadrant, cutting the ideal offshore percentage to 23-30%. Clean conditions are usually limited to dawn patrol and can still be rewarding on a good sandbar.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer marks the low season at Salgueiros. Average swell heights fall to 3ft (0.9-1.0m), periods drop to 8.8-9.3s, and the swell is dominated by short-period NW/NNW windswell. The northeast Atlantic high pressure cells establish the classic nortada regime, with NNW winds blowing 40-47% of the time and offshore windows down to 11-15%. Waves are small, choppy, and generally poor, though occasional early-morning cleanups and longboard sessions keep the stoke alive.
