Best Surf Season (October - March)
Santa Catarina's north-east-facing sandbar is a study in seasonal contrast. The best surfing months run from October through March, when the North Atlantic storm track becomes active and the average wave height climbs from 8ft (2.5m) in October to 10ft (3.1m) by December. Average swell periods sit in the powerful 11-12s range, and the wave rose fills with WNW, NW and NNW groundswell, with a decent slice of N-NE energy wrapping straight into the beach. The wind regime is trickier: the region is dominated by S/SW/W flow during this period, which is offshore for this northeast-facing break. The catch is that these offshore winds are often strong, reducing the window of truly clean conditions to around 11-14% of the time. The main spoiler is N through E wind, which stacks up bumpy onshore surf. Yet when a high-pressure ridge slips over the mainland and a low-pressure system grinds across the Bay of Biscay, Santa Catarina can light up with long-period, overhead-to-well-overhead surf.
Fair Surf Season (April, May and September)
April, May and September offer a compromise: the ocean still has meaningful NW/NNW groundswell, but the average height settles in the fun 6-8ft (1.9-2.4m) range and the periods shorten to the 10.1-10.8s zone. The percentage of ideal offshore wind days improves to 13-20%, especially when the afternoon sea breeze is weak. These are the months when Santa Catarina can deliver clean, rippable waves without the heavy, stormy overkill of mid-winter. It is still worth watching the synoptic charts: a lingering Atlantic low can produce punchy 6ft-plus (2m-plus) surf, while summery high pressure will flatten the beach out.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the low season at Santa Catarina. The Azores High bulges north, the Atlantic storm track retreats to Iceland, and average swell height drops to 4-5ft (1.3-1.5m) with periods in the 9.2-9.5s range. The wave angle becomes more NNW and NW, and the N-NE quadrant still supplies plenty of smaller swell, but the lack of period and energy makes the surf soft. The saving grace is that offshore winds from S/SW/W are at their most frequent and light, with 23-27% ideal conditions. So the lineup can be clean, glassy and empty. For a longboard or a fish, June through August has its charm, but big-wave hunters should look elsewhere.
