São Julião stands as Ericeira’s undeniable swell magnet—a sprawling, sun-bleached strand that pulls in energy from the open Atlantic with an almost magnetic consistency. This sand-bottom beach break unfurls a dynamic canvas of both left and right peaks, offering a clean, peeling canvas for surfers of all stripes.

Best Surf Season & Climatology

Best Surf Season (October - March)

Sao Juliao faces west-north-west and is therefore one of the most exposed beaches on the Lisbon coast. During the winter months the North Atlantic storm track shifts south and the Azores High weakens, allowing one low-pressure system after another to march toward the Iberian Peninsula. This is when average wave heights hover around 2.3-2.6m (7.5-8.5ft) with long periods between 12-13s, and the dominant swell directions (WSW, W, WNW and NW) line up perfectly with the beach. Offshore winds from the east and southeast are most frequent when high pressure builds in behind the storms, creating clean, powerful surf. Ideal wind windows occur 18-25% of the time, and quality can be exceptional.
