Sao Lourenco

São Lourenço is a heavy right-hand reef break that stands as one of Portugal’s premier big-wave arenas. The wave grinds over an uneven reef bed, delivering shifting, almond-crushing barrels and raw, hollow power that can hold up to a solid 6 metres or 18 feet. Remarkably, it remains relatively unfazed by wind, offering clean, steep lines even when other spots get choppy. And perhaps its best-kept secret: this beast rarely sees heavy crowds, rewarding patient chargers with empty, world-class waves.

Best Surf Season (October - March)

Sao Lourenco sits exposed to the open Atlantic and its west-north-west facing beach is a magnet for long-period groundswell. From October through March, the North Atlantic storm track angles toward Iberia, pushing average wave heights into the 2.0-2.6m (6.5-8.5ft) range with dominant periods of 11 to 13 seconds. The swell window - WSW through W, WNW and NW - is consistently energized by strong extratropical cyclones, and the percentage of offshore east-southeast wind days climbs to 20-25 percent. This is when the combination of real size, long-period energy and clean wind becomes most reliable.
