Best Surf Season (October - March)
Vale Figueiras earns its reputation as one of Portugal's heavy, sand-bottomed/point setups when the North Atlantic storm track shifts south between October and March. Average surf heights consistently run 1.9-2.4m (6-8ft), with swell periods frequently in the 11-13 second range. The wind statistics also improve dramatically during this stretch: the percentage of ideal surfing wind jumps to 27-39%, as the Azores High weakens and frontal systems push across the Iberian Peninsula. The classic recipe is a WNW/NW groundswell generated by a strong low-pressure system northwest of Galicia, paired with early-morning light winds or a clean offshore flow. As winter deepens, December and January deliver the biggest, most consistent swell, and the combination of long-period power and falling water temperatures creates proper winter surf.
Fair Surf Season (April - May / September)
During April and May, the surf is still very rideable, but the dynamics shift. Average heights drop from 1.9m in April to 1.6m in May, and average periods fall from 11.1s to 9.8s as the Atlantic storm machine begins to shut down. The growing Azores High brings fewer clean windows, and the daily NNW sea breeze becomes more persistent, making dawn patrol essential. September marks the reverse transition: the ocean is still warm and the first long-period Atlantic swells of autumn start showing up, with average periods rising back to 10.4s and ideal wind percentages climbing to 18%. It can be inconsistent, but the classic Vale Figueiras quality returns for the late-season swells.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
The June to August period is the low season at Vale Figueiras. Average swell heights flatten to 1.4m (4-5ft), average periods hover in the short 8-9s range, and the prevailing NNW wind blows more than half the time. With ideal wind percentages bottoming out between 8-11%, the waves are often small, weak, and chopped up by afternoon wind. A summer cold front or strong northwest groundswell can still produce occasional fun days, but consistent double-overhead quality is rare. This is the time to chase offshore sandbars on the Algarve or a wave with a more sheltered orientation.
