Popov Island seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (December - February)

The Sea of Japan winter monsoon is the engine that drives Popov Island's surf. As the Siberian High strengthens, the dominant wind flow swings into the N/WNW/NW/NNW quadrant, and the percentage of truly offshore wind rises to its yearly peak (17-21%). Average wave heights hover around 0.8-0.9m (2.5-3ft) with short 5.0s periods, but the combination of right-direction swell from the S/SSW/SW/WSW sector and glassy offshore wind creates the most rideable windows of the year. This is not Hawaii-scale energy, even the best month averages only 0.9m (3ft), but for a sheltered, SE-facing spot, winter is the most reliable season.

Fair Surf Season (March - April, October - November)

These transition months offer a trade-off. March and April see a large increase in S/SSW swell generation, with over half of all wave observations coming from the right directions, but average heights remain small (0.6-0.7m / 2-2.5ft) and the dominant wind shifts increasingly onshore from the SSE/S/SE. October and November are the opposite: the northwesterly airflow returns and ideal wind percentages climb back into the low-to-mid teens, while south-swell energy fades but is still present. These months can produce clean, fun, waist-high days when the synoptic timing aligns, but they lack the winter's consistency.

Low Surf Season (May - September)

From late spring through early autumn the East Asian summer monsoon locks in southerly to southeasterly flows. Wave heights drop to 0.5-0.6m (1.5-2ft), periods sit below 6s, and the ideal wind percentage falls to just 5-10%. The swell direction is often good, S/SSW/SE dominate, but the size is marginal and the wind is usually onshore, leaving a mushy, bumpy sea. Late summer and September typhoons passing through the Sea of Japan can briefly inject longer-period south swell, but more often they bring storms and onshore gales. This is the quiet season.
