Perched on the north side of the long jetty guarding the man-made Indian River entrance, Sebastian Inlet remains Florida's most iconic surf destination. While beach replenishment and jetty modifications have altered the angle and currents, diminishing the legendary First Peak wedge of yesteryear, this stretch can still fire up some of the best waves on the East Coast when conditions align. The primary breaks unfold over a sandy bottom, with First Peak, Second Peak, Third Peak, and OK Signs/Swimmers lining the north side. When a hint of north creeps into the swell, Third Peak delivers fast, hollow lefts that demand sharp rail work. Farther up the beach, Chernobyles and Spanish House require a larger push of swell to yield their own left-hand tubes, offering a more elusive but rewarding alternative.

Best Surf Season & Climatology

Best Surf Season (December - March)

The peak of the winter season delivers the most reliable combination of swell and offshore wind. As high-pressure systems frequently park over the eastern US, the resulting pressure gradient funnels consistent ENE to E swell into the inlet. Offshore winds from the SSW to W quadrant are most prevalent during this period, with January and February boasting ideal wind percentages above 30%. Average wave heights hover in the 0.8m to 0.9m range with periods around 8-9 seconds – enough to produce punchy, rideable waves on the better sandbars. While not always pumping, the frequency of clean conditions makes this the prime window for Sebastian Inlet.

Fair Surf Season (April, May, October, November)

Transitional months bring a mix of opportunities and challenges. April and May see a gradual shift toward summer patterns, with decreasing swell heights and a rising influence of easterly trade winds that often blow onshore. However, occasional late-season cold fronts can still deliver a burst of NE swell with light offshore winds. October and November are the start of the ramp-up, as the Atlantic hurricane season and early winter storms begin to fire. Swell heights climb back to the 0.9m to 1.0m range, and periods lengthen, but the wind becomes less reliable – ideal offshore winds drop to around 17-23%. Still, savvy surfers can score clean fun-sized waves when a strong low pressure aligns with a high-pressure wedge bringing westernly flow.

Low Surf Season (June - September)

Summer is a waiting game at Sebastian Inlet. The persistent easterly trade winds blow onshore for the majority of the time, ruining wave quality. Swell heights average a meager 0.5m to 0.6m with periods around 8 seconds, producing mostly small, choppy conditions. The wind is ideal for surfing only 13-18% of the time, usually during brief periods of light westerly flow in the early morning. While the occasional tropical storm or hurricane can produce a few days of firing surf if it tracks just right, such events are rare and unpredictable. For consistent quality waves, it's best to look elsewhere during these months.
