Best Surf Season (October - March)
The North Atlantic roaring back to life in October is the key to Ngor Rights. As autumn deepens, powerful extratropical lows line up off North America and send long-period groundswell across the Atlantic toward West Africa. The average surf height climbs to 1.5-1.8m (5-6ft) with periods of 11-13s, and the swell direction locks into the NNW/NW window that this northwest-facing reef absolutely loves. During the heart of winter, January and February produce some of the most consistent overhead conditions of the year. The main challenge is wind: the northeast trades and Harmattan frequently blow from N, NNE and NE, so clean days are a rare commodity. When high pressure sets up favourably and the breeze becomes E/ESE/SE/SSE, however, Ngor Rights turns into a fast, hollow, world-class left-hander.
Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)
These transitional months are for surfers willing to pick their windows. April and May still hold a good amount of NNW/NW swell, but average periods drop to 9-11s and the prevailing wind often swings more northerly and onshore, making conditions lumpy and less organized. September is the flip side: the last month of the West African monsoon brings plenty of moisture and storminess, yet it also delivers the highest percentage of ideal offshore wind of the whole year (23%). The swell is smaller, around 1.3m (4ft), but when the first autumn groundswell pulses sneak in under ESE/SE winds, the quality can genuinely surprise.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the quietest stretch at Ngor Rights. The North Atlantic storm track shifts north and weakens, and the dominant swell becomes shorter-period NW, WNW and even W/NW windswell. Average heights drop to 1.3-1.4m (4-4.5ft) with periods around 9s, which is punchy but lacking the heavy cavity that makes the reef fire. The monsoon trough also keeps winds predominantly from the W/NW/onshore quadrant, though July and August see a growing number of SE/SSE offshore days. It can still be fun in the 3-5ft range on a clean day, but this is not the time for epic Ngor Rights.
