Yoff Beach seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (September - October)
The dry, surf-starved days of the Sahelian winter are still ahead, but for Yoff Beach the true gems appear in the autumn window. By September the monsoon's southwesterly flow is still blowing offshore for this north-northeast-facing stretch of sand, keeping the surf clean and organized, while the first pulses of North Atlantic storm swell start to fill in with more consistency. The result is a magic combination: shoulder-high to slightly overhead waves, long enough periods, and a surface free of the relentless northerly chop that plagues the rest of the year.
Fair Surf Season (June - August and November)
The summer months bring the highest percentages of ideal offshore wind, as the monsoon trough shifts north and the prevailing flow becomes S to WSW. Wave heights, however, drop to 4-5ft (1.3-1.4m) and periods shorten to 9-10s, producing fun but modest waves with less power, often on more westerly swell angles. November sees the ocean's energy ramp up again - average heights back to 5-5.5ft (1.6m) and periods to 12s - but the wind direction flips back to N/NE as the Harmattan re-establishes, so you'll be dodging onshore trade winds to snag a clean set.
Low Surf Season (December - May)
This is the North Atlantic's prime season for swell generation, with powerful lows sending consistent NNW/NW groundswells to Senegal. Yoff faces NNE, so this swell direction is not exactly the ideal N-NE window, but the energy is undeniable. Unfortunately, the accompanying wind regime is not. The Azores High drives persistent N-NE trade winds across the Canary Current, which blow straight onshore at Yoff. With ideal offshore wind occurring only 1-3% of the time during these months, the surf is frequently a mix of solid, long-period swell and messy, blown-out conditions. Only rare days with a southerly breeze or a lull in the trades reveal the true potential of these pumping winter waves.
